Baked food always makes delicious home made treats. To bake the food perfectly, it is necessary to choose the right type of bakeware. There are different types of materials used to make Bakeware and it is wise to choose the one that exactly meets your requirements.

 Bakeware is a necessary item in any kitchen. Bakeware forms include cookie trays, cake and pie pans, weighing balance and loaf pans. Kitchen bakeware is available in a large variety of materials where each type of material will have a different impact on your finished baked item.

Here we are going to have a look at some of the most common materials used in bakeware.

€ Aluminium - This is one of the most popular bakeware options as it resists warping and allows the food to be cooked evenly. However, the shiny texture of aluminium makes it inappropriate for browning. It is better to use heavy gauge rather than thinner type of aluminium.  € Glass - Glass oven-proof bakeware is made with tempered glass and is a very good conductor of heat. Because of the fact that it conducts heat so well, it lets the food bake nicely. Oven-proof glass bakeware heats up quickly thus saving around 25 degrees. Glass bakeware must be washed with hot soapy water and metal scrubbers and abrasive cleansers should be avoided.

€ Insulated - This type of bakeware has two layers of metal that are cushioned by a layer of air. It is this layer of air that helps in even baking and browning. Insulated bakeware heats up slower to protect the food from the heat source, so needs more time for baking. This type of bakeware can be washed using methods that apply to other metals.

€ Non-Stick - Usually made from aluminium or steel, non-stick bakeware has a non-stick coating. This prevents things like breads, cakes, muffins, etc. from sticking to the surface. The coating gives the bakeware a darker look that allows absorption of heat more quickly. It is because of this coating that the food gets evenly baked or dried out. Non-stick bakeware should be soaked in warm water to loosen the stuck on food and washed in hot soapy water. Do not use metal utensils or knives on the surface of the bakeware.

€ Stainless Steel - Even though stainless steel is very light and economical, it is not recommended because of being a poor conductor of heat. This is the reason why it distributes heat unevenly and causes inconsistence when baking food. To care for stainless steel bakeware, wash with hot soapy water. You can also use a nylon scrubbing pad or nylon scraper for stuck on food.

€ Stone - One of the most versatile materials used in baking, this type of bakeware is made from stone fired at extremely high temperatures. Though stone bakeware takes a little longer than other materials to heat up, it distributes heat evenly, retains it and keeps the food warm long after it is cooked. This type of bakeware should not be cleaned using soap. The excess food should be scraped off and washed with warm water.

 € Silicone - Silicon bakeware is made of flexible material that can be used in the microwave or oven. Silicone doesn't absorb heat like other materials but allows heat to transfer evenly to the food. It can withstand temperatures ranging from -400F to 5800F.

Bakeware is a necessity in the modern kitchen, even if you don't fancy yourself a baker. Just because you might not be ready to make homemade loaves of bread each week, you'll need a good collection of baking utensils to be able to do most oven related cooking tasks. There are a variety of styles and finishes to choose from when selecting Bakeware. Stoneware is a popular choice, known for even cooking.

This heavy Bakeware goes from the oven to the table easily, and can be found in almost any color and style you can imagine. Stoneware is nonporous, so it's almost impossible to stain, and it won't absorb moisture that can damage the pieces and cause them to crack. The biggest disadvantage with stoneware is that it can chip and break. Pyrex is the original glass Bakeware.

You can see through the dishes to see what you're cooking. It's no longer just available in clear glass, though, you can purchase different shades of Pyrex to coordinate with your kitchen. That way you can take the dishes out of the oven and put them right on the table, giving it even more appeal. Unfortunately, glass can chip, crack and break, so if you drop Pyrex or other glass dish, it's probably a goner.

 Teflon Bakeware is still a popular choice for its nonstick properties. The slick coating makes easy work of clean up, and leaves the food intact. Cookies and breads slide right off the coated surface making it ideal to use when a pretty presentation is essential. Extra care must be taken when using and cleaning Teflon so it doesn't become scratched, which will ruin the nonstick properties of the surface.

Metal utensils should be avoided; instead plastic tools must be used to avoid scratching the nonstick coating. Some people still swear by cast iron Bakeware and cookware. This heavy duty material is known for its ability to retain heat and handle extremely hot temperatures, which makes it ideal for frying pans and woks. Cast iron Dutch ovens are another popular choice.

Cast iron does require special care before it's even used. It must be seasoned with a layer of grease, which cannot be later washed off with soap. Cast iron must be scrubbed with plain hot water, or hot water and corn starch or salt, to avoid removal of the seasoned nonstick surface. And one of its chief advantages, how heavy duty and long lasting it is, is one of its biggest drawbacks.

Cast iron cookware is extremely heavy, so pulling them in and out of the oven might be a challenge for some. And the typically large size of the pieces can make them a challenge to store when not in use. Metal Bakeware is still available, but has lost much of its appeal in the age of the microwave. Though heavy duty metal pieces can still be found in most kitchens, their uses appear limited when compared to stoneware and Pyrex which look nice on a tabletop.

Metal can also scratch and rust, unlike these other surfaces, limiting its usefulness. A relatively new development in Bakeware is the use of silicone. It is extremely lightweight, unlike heavy stoneware and glass pieces. And you can bend silicone pieces, which makes storage extra easy. It can't chip or rust, and it won't break, which makes using this safer than stoneware or glass.

These properties make silicone extremely long lasting, too. Silicone is easily to clean with soap and water, and doesn't require special tools. It bakes evenly, and releases food well so there is no sticking. The biggest problem with silicone is that it's new, and many still look at it skeptically. It seems less substantial than a bulky stoneware dish, and that makes it seem less worth the price even though the investment will last for years.

Just what a bakeware set is can be hard to define as there is no real standard type or number of pieces for bakeware sets. The simple reason for this being the different needs in the kind of baking each each person does. If your baking for yourself or just a couple your needs may be met with a small 3 or 4 piece set to which you may add an extra pan or two as needed. This can mean a nice way to save a little money on your purchase of bakeware.

However if you are baking for a large family or group you be looking at a 5 to 10 piece baking set. For the serious baker the set will continue to grow as your skills increase. As you can see a set number of pans will only be found according to the needs of each baker.

Now for the different types of bakeware. Again the personal taste of each baker will determine what should be purchased. My long time favorites are the glass bakeware sets from Anchor Hocking and Pyrex. The varied colors available from Anchor Hocking make for a beautiful and function filled set for your kitchen. Another high on my list of favorites, although a bit more expensive, is the Le Creuset Stoneware which is a porcelain enamel finish that resists stains. scratches and chipping.

You will not find some items in glass such as cookie sheets which are supplied by makers like Calphon and Kitchenaid, along with many other makers of fine nonstick bakeware sets.

So for the best bakeware set, you will need to determine your personal needs and skills first and then do some research on the bakeware available. As always buy the best you can afford, not so much because it is pretty but rather how long it will last. That is how you save your purchase. Buying a cheap piece of bakeware will not likely make a happy baker. Only the happy baker will deliver those wonderful tasting cookies and bread. Happy baking.
